A Season of Growth: Clinton Jets’ Championship Thriller
I had the honor of attending the Clinton Jets 10U championship game, an intense battle that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Due to strict security, I couldn’t get the photo coverage I wanted, but in a way, it was a blessing, I got to fully soak in the moment with my family. My son is a hooper, so as we watched, I broke down Coach CT’s coaching style to him, pointing out the strategic moves and leadership that kept the team in the fight.
At one point, the Clinton Jets were down by 10, and you could see the discouragement creeping in. But Coach CT wasn’t having it. He rallied the team, assuring them there was still plenty of time left. "Just play your game." I wouldn’t be surprised if he also told them to ignore the refs, because, let’s be real, those calls were something else (a discussion for another day).
Then came the moment that had the entire gym on its feet. In the final seconds, the Jets fought back and hit a buzzer-beater that should have sealed the victory. The crowd erupted. The energy was electric. But in a heartbreaking twist, a questionable call sent the game into overtime instead of locking in the win.
Overtime was a battle, but the whistle kept favoring the Woodridge Warriors. It felt like every few seconds, they were at the free-throw line. Those little moments add up, and despite the Jets’ relentless effort, they fell just short, losing by a single point, 42-41. Tears were everywhere. This was the kind of game that stays with you.
Even in the face of heartbreak, the coaches made sure their players walked out with their heads high. Coach CT, Coach E, and Coach V reminded them of the journey, how far they had come, and how much they had improved. Coach E told them to reflect on their growth since day one. "We may have lost the game, but ultimately, you won. Stay locked in the gym, and we’ll be back."
And that’s the mark of a real team. It’s not just about the wins; it’s about the fight, the heart, and the lessons that fuel the next run. The Clinton Jets will be back. Believe that.
